Cloth diapers today are not your mother’s cloth diapers.  Say goodbye to vinyl pants and sticky pins and hello to the ease of Velcro and soft waterproof fabrics.  There are so many benefits and new technologies that it is easy to make the switch to cloth and never look back.

The cloth diapers through Simple-Hearted are a stuffable cover.  Our covers are made with a PUL (PolyUrethane Laminate) outer and a bamboo fleece inner.  PUL is a water proof laminate fabric.  The inner layer of organic bamboo fleece is super absorbent and soft on baby’s skin.  These fabrics all wash and dry beautifully!   These diapers are secured on your child with Velcro tabs that are sewn onto each side.

The diaper covers are designed to work with an “insert”. The insert is made up of organic bamboo terry cloth and fleece.  In the back of the diaper there is a slit that allows you to customize the absorbency of your diapers.  Simply insert 1or 2 inserts to increase the absorbency of the diaper.  When you go to wash, shake out the insert, wash, dry and re-stuff with a fresh insert and you are ready to go again and again and again.

Cloth diapers are an investment in the beginning, but the pay off for you, your child, and the environment are unbelievable.  Here are a few facts and benefits of cloth diapering!

  • Healthier: Disposables are laden with chemicals which have been associated with many physical problems. Cloth diaper users tend to have less issue with diaper rash, irritated bottoms and other common complaints from disposable diaper parents.  Many parents will tell you that they spent less time trying to potty train or educate their child about elimination communication (EC) when they used cloth diapers.
  • Benefits the environment: Cloth diapers are reusable. Quality cotton diapers will hold up for 75 - 100 washings (at minimum), and can be saved for the next child. Although energy is required for washing the diapers, it is a fraction of the energy used for disposables. Cloth diapers are also recyclable, making excellent cotton rags in their 'afterlife'. The reduce, reuse and recycle concept means less trash for the environment.
  • Less expensive: Many studies have compared the costs of disposables diapers versus cloth washed at home, and cloth diapers provided by commercial diaper services. Results vary, but most agree that the cost of cloth diapers, home laundered, is considerably lower than buying disposables. Estimates range from $800 - $1600 in savings over the 2 1/2 years, and 6000 diaper changes, of diaper use.
  • Cute: Okay, it's also important to look at cloth diapering as a fashion statement. Cloth diapers are cute! They come in fashion colors and prints. Have fun with it!

CARE/HINTS to Cloth diapering!

  • After changing, deposit the solid contributions into the toilet and throw the diapers into a diaper pail. The pail should be plastic with a fitted lid and have a plastic liner.
  • Pre-soak diapers, and set the washing machine on double wash, double rinse, hot water wash and rinse.
  • Check for stains, and treat with stain remover if necessary.
  • Line dry, or put in a dryer with the heat set on 'high'. If line dried, you can finish off by putting the diapers in the dryer for 10-15 minutes to be sure they are dry on the inside.
  • Cloth diapers can be supplemented by disposables. Use disposables when traveling or if your child goes to day care.
  • Vinegar is preferable to commercial fabric softeners. Commercial fabric softeners can decrease the diaper absorbency because of the oils imparted to fabrics. Vinegar also helps to get the last soap out of the diapers which minimizes skin allergic reactions.
  • Avoid using bleach and “sun” out stains.  Simply place in the direct sun and before you know it stains are sunned out.
  • Keep the diaper pail out of sunlight and away from heat sources.
  • Use detergents recommended by the supplier of your diapers. Commercial laundry products leave residues which can chafe the baby and cause premature diaper wear.
